Long overdue post

Yes, we have been horrible bloggers here in the Finberg household. We've had a busy summer. We've went to the Catskills for a family reunion back in July and our regular trip to VA in August to visit the girls grandparents. We also been hanging out with our playgroup, going to the playground, and otherwise keeping busy running errands.

Our family reunion trip included our first stay in a hotel when we didn't use pack 'n plays for the girls. It was....interesting. The first night the girls did okay sharing a bed. The second night, Sophie kept falling out of bed. The beds were dreadfully uncomfortable, so Dave chose to sleep on the floor instead and Sophie ended up in bed with me. While we loved seeing our extended family, we were all happy to return to our own beds.

Our VA trip included a trip to the zoo, a local carnival, and a post dinner visit to the local ice cream stand with Nana and Poppa. Not all in the same day. :)
ur days with Grandma, Granddaddy, and Great Grandma featured a beach trip, helping Granddaddy take care of the dogs, cats, and horses (including a couple of horseback rides), and lots of outdoor playtime on Grandma's covered porch and in her fenced yard.

For the last two weeks, we've been gearing up for preschool. Today we attended the girls orientation. The kids went to their classroom while the parents went to the "cafetorium" to get some details about school policies and so forth. Hannah dived right in but Sophie seemed a bit anxious when we first got there. With all the parents and kids from two session crowding into the classroom, it was loud and overwhelming. She was calm when we left the classroom and both girls were engaged and happy when we got back. They like it so much, they cried when it was time to leave. They are both exited to go back for their real first day on Tuesday. They will be attending Monday-Thursday from 8am-10:30am. Now we have to go shopping for a few things on the supply list we got today.

In other big news, both girls are finally potty pros. Both girls are in underwear and we only have a few accidents. We had a few setbacks with Sophie, due to her chronic constipation issues, but she finally seems like she's ready to conquer that last hurdle. Thankfully, their preschool understands that all the kids are newly trained and is ready to handle accidents without making an issue of it.

By now, I'm sure you are saying: "ENOUGH with the text, where are the pictures". Well, our camera is broken, so we have no pictures from this morning. Dave's sister Sharon is going to loan us her camera for Tuesday if we don't find a suitable replacement this weekend. We do have grandparent provided pictures from our two trips and I'll post some of those soon.

There is a great new blog called Bed Timing by the authors of a book by the same name. They are developmental psychologists who studied sleep in the context of a child's developing brain, sense of self, etc. Their book talks about sleep and changing sleep behavior in conjunction with children's development and finding the right timing to make changes. Very interesting stuff.

New solution to an old problem

Despite the last few days being cold and rainy, warmer weather has essentially arrived. We have started making the transition into spring and summer clothes. This has led to a my most recent attempts to clothe two skinny little girls. Tops are no problem. They can wear most anything in the 3T, 4T, and even little girls size 4. The 3Ts are getting snug, but I have a stash of size 4's waiting in the back of the closet. I thought shorts would be as problematic as pants, but I've found an interesting solution.

Walmart has a new line of infant pants/shorts (Lee Rider). For whatever reason, they are cut a little differently than most of the other brands. The 12 month size shorts are a perfect fit for Hannah and Sophie. They fit in the waist. They are long enough in the rise. They have several styles that are long enough in the leg to make really good shorts for the girls. I also picked up a couple of pairs of jeans with a ruffle around the ankle. They fall just below the girls knees and make really cute capri's. Makes me wish I hadn't sold all the girls infant clothes. Maybe I could have recycled some of the jeans into capri's or Bermuda shorts for this summer.

New Kitchen

On Sunday, we picked up a new play kitchen for the girls. Another family from my local Mothers of Multiples club was selling it for a really good price. Since it is much nicer than the plastic set we had, we decided to upgrade. I don't have a picture of it in place at our house, yet, but here's the picture that was posted in the ad:

We had a really bad night on Sunday night, but that's another post for another time. As a result, everyone in the house was cranky and difficult. I got up with the girls in the AM and let Dave sleep in. After Dave was up and dressed for the day, he took the girls out for walk around the lake and a stop at Whole Foods while I went back to bed for a couple of hours. After a late lunch, we realized we still had errands to run but very little energy to cope with two cranky girls. So, knowing that the girls are MUCH easier to deal with when separated from their sibling, we each took a girl and ran a separate errand. I am always amazed at how different and how much easier it is to have just one child. Both girls are so much more cooperative when separated from her sister. At home, they tend to play more independently and I can even get some things done around the house and when the lone child "helps" me, she's actually kind of helpful. Yesterday was the first time I've taken one of the girls out alone, though. Usually, Dave takes one out while the other stays home with me. Dave and Sophie went grocery shopping. Hannah and I went to Babies R Us. Going someplace with just one of the girls is a surreal experience.

The drive there was quiet. Hannah sat in near silence, drinking her juice and "reading" a flap book. No rousing versions of Itsy Bitsy Spider from Sophie. No Hannah screaming at her sister to "be quiet, I trying to read." No fights over which seat they got or which book they got. No demands to trade books. Just quiet. I kept checking to see if she had fallen asleep, but she was awake and content.

The actual shopping felt just as strange. I didn't have to figure out how to manage two 3 year olds and a cart with just one seat (also a post for another time). I just put Hannah in the seat and did my shopping. No fighting between the girls about who gets to sit in the cart seat and who gets to walk, etc. We also went unnoticed by the store clerks and other shoppers. No questions about twins. We finished up in about 1/2 the time I'd normally alot for the same trip with both girls in tow. I'm sensing more separate errands for the family in our future. :)

World's Best Babysitter

I often find myself mentally composing blog posts that never get posted. I think of something I want to write about and then I get distracted by the girls and the rest of the daily demands and before long it is bedtime and I'm too tired to blog. So here's one of the posts I wanted to make a few days ago.

We have the best babysitter in the world. I've know Shauna since she was 13. Last week she graduated from law school. Before too long, she's going to be a gainfully employed lawyer and won't have time to babysit for us. That will be a sad, sad day indeed. The girls adore Shauna and she is a lifesaver for me in many respects. Shauna is the only (non family) babysitter that I trust to drive the girls places. If I need to get something done around the house, Shauna is always willing to take the girls to the library or playground. Not everyone is willing to tackle an outing with twins without an extra adult, but Shauna does it with ease.

Shauna was here on Friday and gave me a wonderful day. While she entertained the girls with Play Doe at the kitchen table, I spent a couple of hours alone in my bedroom. I caught up on email. Read a book. Relaxed. Then I helped her fix an early lunch for the girls and we chatted while all four of us had lunch. After lunch, we packed up the girls' bag with snacks, pull-ups, etc. and Shauna took them to the indoor playground where we have a membership. She and the girls were out of the house for 2.5 hours. During that time, I cleaned. I got more cleaning done in that short block of time than I can get done in a week with the girls "helping" me.

Preschool update

The preschool paperwork arrived yesterday. The girls are going to be in the early morning session, from 8:00-10:30. While I knew we'd have a few problems with the midday session (11-1:30), I think I was really hoping for that one.

We'll all have to get up an hour earlier than usual in order to get the girls to school on time. None of us are naturally early risers. While the girls sometimes wake up as early as 6am, 7:00 or 7:30 is more typical. If they have a bad night, waking from nightmares or other sleep disturbances, then they've been know to sleep until 8:30 or later. Since the girls stopped napping more than a year ago, the ability to sleep in when necessary really makes a difference in their behavior and moods. We also never make plans to be anywhere before 9:30 because we just aren't morning people and getting the girls dressed and moving is a huge battle. If we are headed out for the morning, breakfast is usually dry cereal and a cup of milk in the car because they don't like to eat breakfast first thing in the morning.

Dave will be dropping the girls off every morning, once they've gotten used to going to school, but I'm not sure how productive I'll be first thing in the morning, either. I'm really going to have to fight against my tendency to loiter in the shower and lingering over breakfast and my morning email and blog reading. I'm also wondering if those 2 hours alone will really feel like a break for me since I'll be picking the girls up mid morning with what is essentially a whole day left to try an entertain 2 energetic 4 year olds.

Of course, none of these worries mean that I am reconsidering our choice of schools. I love the program and the teacher. I like that the girls will be going to kindergarten at the same school and that a full range of services (speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc.) are available on site, should they need them. The school has a nice playground for outdoor play and a gymnasium for those days that it is too wet or cold to play outside. Dave is happy that he'll be able to start fitting a workout into his day as well, since he'll be getting out the door much earlier than he does now.

I'm sure we get used to the new routine and I'll find new afternoon activities to keep the girls entertained. Maybe our holiday wish list will include gift certificates for gymnastics or other programs. I guess all this really means is that the girls aren't the only ones who don't deal with with change. All in all, this should be very interesting.

Well, Sophie was plagued with nightmares last night. I think between Dave and I we were going in to sooth her every 2 hours. The good news is that the new big girl beds allow us to lay down in the beds with the girls rather than sitting/laying on the floor beside them. My back is very thankful for the new beds. Now, if only I knew why Sophie was having nightmares.....

Preschool

As is typical, we were dithering around looking for a preschool for the girls. We had visited a few, from the super expensive, to the more pedestrian day care plus. One of the ones we liked
best was the Wilmington public preschool. Unfortunately, there are very few spots. In fact, this year was a high availability, with a whopping 13 spots available at our school (there are 2 in town).

So the town conducts a lottery. So, as I'm finishing up the registration papers (times 2, my hand was cramping), I ask about twins in the lottery. And am told that it is per child, not per family. Ick. Ick. Well, the registration is cheap so I file it anyways, but since someone we know was at 27 on the waiting list before the odds are bleak.

And amazingly enough, we get a call on monday announcing that both Hannah AND Sophie were admitted to the Boutwell preschool, and please call us back by tomorrow if you want to attend. We raced for the phone.

Perhaps the recession played a part, since there were only 24 total applicants this year. Still, even with a big class and few applicants, it was only 28% that they both got in. And interestingly enough, we were told that we were the first set of twins admitted both through the lottery (there are spots reserved for Early Intervention).

It does raise some interesting questions on what a fair policy is. As the applicant pool grows, getting 2 children in at once becomes remote. But that would be true for getting consecutive siblings as well. Per family is certainly good for parents of twins, but slightly hurts everyone else.

At Julie's party, Sharon was handing party favors to Julie to distribute. The girls are watching with interest. Sharon picked one up, said "Hannah" and handed it to Julie. Julie was a bit confused, and asked which was Hannah. Sharon said "She's in the blue shirt."

Hannah, who for some reason decided not to answer Julie herself, now looks down at her shirt, notices it is blue, and shouts out "That's Me!"

The adults in the room who observed this now burst into laughter. Rhonda almost bust a gut when I told it to her.

The true test of whether or not you have enough track - is it taller than you? We picked up most of 2 sets off of craigslist. Unfortunately, they didn't include the marbles, so the first evening was a bit of a scramble until we found our stash.
